If you are the parent of a child who is celebrating a birthday during the winter months you may actually dread the idea of having a birthday party. Since the weather may be too cold to go outside, many parents feel their only option is a rowdy and overexcited bunch of kids running through their home hyped up on sugar. But you really can have a lot of fun with winter birthdays. With a little creativity and planning you can host a birthday party for your winter born child that will have everyone talking until next year! Here are some great winter birthday party ideas-
Winter Tubing Party-This is great party idea for kids of both sexes ages eight through twelve. The party starts with sending out snowmen invitations to a manageable number of your child’s friends. Remember that for the tubing part of this party you will need an adult for about every four kids. After the kids arrive you can then take them to a local tubing spot. Most have well groomed runs with lifts that “drag” the sledder and their tube up the hill. Be sure to pick a weekday evening or some other time that will not be too crowded (since you do not want to stand in line to long). After 1 ½ to 2 hours of tubing (everyone should be pretty tired by then) on the ride home serve hot chocolate and pretzels. If you want the party to continue at home then you may want to build a fire in the fireplace for some cozy fun. While this party can be extended into a sleepover you can also use the time to serve the birthday cake and watch a winter-themed movie. A cute winter-themed igloo birthday cake can be made of cream-filled donuts and a snow tube on top with a snowman made from donut holes- the hat made from a small peanut butter cup and scarf from fabric. The birthday table is decorated with snowflakes and you can hang blue and white sparkles from the lights. If you want to play games try these- see how many words the kids can come up with from the word snowflake, pass the snowball (a ball that looked like a snowball) with the winner staying “frozen” till spring and a snowman wrap where the kids take turns wrapping each other with toilet paper and decorating each other like a snowman. The winner is the one who completed the roll first and completely covered the snowman. Be sure and take lots of pictures of all the fun!
Winter fairy wonderland-This is a great idea for little girls ages four through seven. Even if you live in a warm weather climate there is no reason your child cannot celebrate their birthday in winter style. It’s important to keep in mind that this is a costume party so parents will need plenty of notice. For invitations use a winter theme that has a snowman on it. You may even find the right theme in Christmas cards (just cover the inside message with your party info). Since young children are going to be involved you may want to give the menu so that parents can be forewarned if food allergies are going to be a problem. Be sure to ask all the guests to come dressed as a snow fairy or snow princess. For decorations try to find as many snowflake and snowman things as you can. To set the theme cover the walls with 3-D snowflakes and add to the scenery with polar bears and penguins. You can also cover the ceiling fans and light fixtures with crepe paper to make them look like they were covered in icicles. For the really adventurous you can buy bags of fake snow with silver glitter and sprinkle it over the entire carpet (it vacuums up!)For games fill up a blow-up whale pool with snow (the girls can then jump in it and make snow angels. Fill another wade pool with ice and do ice fishing. You can also play “freeze dancing” and pass the “melting snowball” with Styrofoam balls. Or you may want to let them have a snowball fight using bowls of cotton balls. Be sure to serve finger foods for this age group. There are lots of winter themed party foods to find online.
