A birthday cake is a traditional dessert to serve at a birthday. Generally you put candle on it, and light them, and then sing the birthday song. Cakes can be one of the biggest parts of the birthday party, and so making a cake that looks great and tastes great is critical.
Because cakes can be very expensive, more and more people are making cakes at home. A cake mix from a box can cost as little as a dollar, and with the extra ingredients needed, you are still looking at under $2. This is great for the person on a budget. The problem is that when you buy a cake that is made at a bakery, or professionally done, you are not paying for the cake as much as for the cake decorations. So, how can you decorate your cake at home and still get that great look, without the high price? You can use a cake topper!
Cake toppers come in every theme imaginable, and you can buy them just about anywhere. If you go online, and type “cake toppers” into Amazon.com you will find a number of results, everything from Princesses and Super heroes for your little ones, to coffins and cobwebs for your Over the Hill party. However, with these you still can run into the problem of expense. A cake topper can be pricey. But, let’s look at some ways to make fun and creative cake toppers without the cost:
1. Home made. One fantastic option is to take whatever your theme is, and make your own cake toppers with printouts. You can print the item out in small size, and stick it to a toothpick which you insert into a cake. These are great for large cakes, as well as for cupcakes. You can use any theme you want, with pictures, phrases, etc. They are a lot of fun, and you can spice them up with color, and extra things.
2. Plastic toys. Why pay $11.50 for a dump truck cake topper, when you can buy a plastic dump truck toy at the dollar store? You can buy almost anything in plastic, whether it is money, dolls, super heroes or action figures, etc. These make great cake toppers. You just use icing to secure them to the place on the cake that you want. So, be creative. You could use plastic filled eggs as a cake topper for a birthday near Easter, or spider rings for one near Halloween.
Don’t forget to use icing. Icing is a great way to add some life to your cake top. Find some food coloring, and dye your icing several colors to make a visual focal point. Then use piping bags and get creating. You can make a few practice cakes before the birthday, and try out various toppers to see which ones work best.
