One of the most popular things to do when you are throwing a birthday party is to follow a theme. For children, these themes tend to be based on their favorite television show, movie or toys. For example, if your toddler’s favorite show is Sesame Street, you may want to throw a party where you incorporate the characters from that show. There are many different ways to incorporate a theme into your party plans. Here are just a few examples:
Decorations
Incorporating a theme with your decorations can be as simple or as involved as you like. If your child is having a pirate themed party, simple black, white or red streamers and few paper pirate’s flags can transform a room. If you really want to get fancy, you can use a large cardboard box to cut out a helm or the profile of a boat. You can turn your kitchen or coffee table into a pirate ship simply by taping your cutout along the side of the piece of furniture. The same types of ideas can be used in a number of different themes using streamers and cut-outs that correlate to your little boy’s or girl’s favorite thing.
Party favors
Party favors are fun to have and make your guests feel better about being at the party. For children, party favors can be simple dollar store trinkets that correspond to your theme and some bulk candy that you put into cellophane bags and tie with a bow. Adult party favors for themed parties are a little trickier and could cost more money. Nevertheless, you can still follow your theme with the party favor. For example, if you are throwing a 40’s birthday party, you could make a party favor of 40 pieces of candy or a small gift basket with the menu of food served at the party and a few ingredients to get started.
The cake
The cake is a huge part of the party. You simply cannot celebrate a birthday without one! That is why it is so important to incorporate the theme of the party onto the cake. This can be done a number of ways. Edible photograph transfers are readily available in grocery stores. By placing these sheets in your printer, you can print an edible photograph and then place it on the face of your cake. Clean toys can also make a plain sheet cake a lot more exciting. For a car themed birthday party, ice the cake a dark color, like chocolate, to mimic the look of mud or dirt and place clean toy cars on the cake. Use icing and chunks of cake to make hills and divots in the road. Have a place on the cake where two cars crashed and there is a pile of cake, frosting, and car wreckage.
Games
Thinking of themed games can be a challenge, but again, there are a lot of different options. Sometimes even changing the name of the game to have it work with your theme is enough to make it fun. Traditional games of Duck, Duck, Goose can take on a sports theme if you simply call the game football, football, soccer, for example. Using specific pictures to portray a theme is also a good way of making up your own fun games. A game of pin the tail on the donkey can turn into pin the tiara onto the princess or pin the trunk on the elephant. With a little creativity you can easily make the changes to your party that allow you to incorporate a theme in a unique way.
