When thinking of a birthday party a traditional scene comes to mind of an elementary age child blowing out the candles on their birthday cake. However, those young children grow into teenagers who still like birthday parties. While it may not be as easy to throw a party for your teen as it would be for a younger child, with some creativity and planning you can celebrate your teen’s birthday with style.
Before you go ahead with a birthday party for your teen here are some keys to success:
1.) The theme is still important. Just like planning for any party, planning a birthday party for your teen is crucial. You should ask yourself the following questions to determine the direction you want the party to go.
• What is my budget for the party? It is important to keep in mind that some ideas can be done in a budget friendly way while others can get costly fast.
• How many teens will we invite? The general rule of inviting as many guests as how old your child can work but many teens are looking for large parties where they can invite all of their friends.
• Will this be a co-ed party?
• Will I need additional chaperons for this party? (Generally the answer is always-yes!)
• Will we have the party at home or at another location? Remember more guests means more space.
• Will I need professionals to help with the party?
2.) Food is very important. While teens are still somewhat picky eaters, many are much more willing to try new things. For younger teens, hands on food experiences like pizza making or even cookie decorating can be fun. Older teens may be less interested in assembling their food but may find Chinese or other ethnic food, whether it be takeout or homemade, great for their party.
3.) Music is extremely important. Whether there will be dancing or not many teens view the music at a party as essential. Whether you hire a DJ or bring in a band you will want to research what your teen is listening to and wants to have at their party. Be sure to include some of their favorite songs, no matter how hideous you find them, keeping in mind that you still have the final say on what does and does not get played.
4.) Activities are important. To avoid the dreaded crowd of teens just standing around, keep in mind that teens have the skills and the need to take on adventure. Younger teens may love a scavenger hunt or tie dye party. Older teens on the verge of adulthood may love a limo and event party. If there is a special event coming to town, hire a well-stocked limo to pick up your teenager and their friends. Even if there’s nothing special going on, going to a movie in a limo would make for a birthday to remember.
5.) Location, location, location. Just like in real estate teens may judge a party by where it is held. Empty warehouses, movie theaters and vintage buildings can all provide unique spots for a teen’s birthday party. Girls may love a spa or makeover birthday party. Simply rent space in a local spa for all the girls to get the full treatment while boys who are into sports may love having an entire sports arena for their party. Just imagine your son and all of his friends holding court in an indoor soccer facility or paintball court that you have rented just for them.
Keeping the important elements like theme, budget, location and food, among others, in mind will make for easy planning. Bear these suggestions in mind as you plan a party to remember!
